Thiruvananthapuram: Union Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman will visit the cyclone-hit areas of Thiruvananthapuram on Monday and will evaluate the rescue efforts.

On Sunday, Sitharaman arrived at the Thiruvananthapuram airport by a special aircraft at 4.30 pm but later went to Kanyakumari to assess the extent of damage. She will return to Kerala today.

At the airport, Sitharaman was welcomed by Union Minister Alphons Kannanthanam, Cooperation Minister Kadakampally Surendran, Fisheries minister J Mercykutty Amma, Navy officials and Thiruvananthapuram District Collector welcomed the Defence minister at the airport.

The Navy said that the extent of damage due to the cyclone is huge and the minister is visiting the place to take stock of the situation and ascertain the ground realities.
