Veni and Rani get a mom from New Zealand
Thiruvananthapuram: The flashing cameras and a packed crowd never seemed to bother little Veni and her younger sister Rani.
The tiny tots were enjoying that special feeling -- the security and comfort of sitting with their mom for the first time in their life.
The venue was the adoption ceremony organised by the State Child Welfare Committee here.
Derin Luis Mensi (46) hailing from Hawks Bay at Napier in New Zealand formally adopted the kids on Wednesday.
Derin, a music therapist and a single woman, was making moves to adopt two young girls from Kerala for long time.
“I enjoyed a celebrated childhood and there was no dearth of affection and money. Hence, I decided to gift such a life to some unfortunate kids, she said.
For the last few years, Derin has been sending the sisters letters and gifts addressing them as mom. To complete adoption process, Derin had reached Thiruvananthapuram on Monday, along with her friend Elizabeth.
In her speech she started with ‘Namaste’, Derin thanked everyone for gifting her two daughters and added said they will be raised with all love and care.
Both Veni and Rani became inmates of the children’s home in 2012. The Child Welfare Committee had received an official permission to give children for adoption to foreign natives in 2015. This is the first adoption of its kind since then.
CWC general secretary S P Deepak inaugurated the function. Derin will return to New Zealand with the kids on March 19.
