Alappuzha: Kerala’s own coir is now making a new trend in clothes and ornaments. Coir embroidery on Kerala sarees and salwars was the centre of attraction of women visitors at the ongoing Coir Kerala Expo in Alappuzha.

The embroidery work in coir was made on pleets and the 'pallu' (munthani). Floral embroidery with coir was the major attraction. All were hand embroidery designs.

A designer takes 13 days to complete the embroidery work on a saree. Meanwhile, work on salwars takes lesser time.

A saree with coir embroidery costs a minimum Rs 6000 and starting price of salwar is Rs 3000.

Coir accessories including earrings, necklaces, footwear, bags and show pieces are available at the expo.

The coir products which mark a new fashion trend is available at the stall run by Kalavoor resident Mamatha Sunil.
