Tanur: Panic gripped the coastal village of Tanur in Malappuram as workers of Muslim League and CPM clashed, leading to widespread destruction of houses, vehicles and fishing equipment.

The clash began after some people pelted stones at around 10 pm on Sunday. The clashes gradually turned violent. The agitators destroyed and set on fire around 30 houses at Chappappadi Korman coastal area.

Police fired in the air to disperse the violent mob, but failed to control them. Tensed situation continued till 2.30 am on Monday.

The place where fishing equipment were stored have been set on fore by attackers, causing a loss running into lakhs.

Besides, they set afire a pigeon nest in the vicinity, killing 63 birds. Another store room in the area was also set ablaze, where fishing tools including nets worth over Rs 18 lakh were completely charred.

More than 30 vehicles including two trucks owned by fisher folk, were set ablaze. District Police Chief Debesh Kumar Behera visited the spot.

Many people got injured in the incident and have been admitted to various hospitals. Several police personnel have also been injured in the clashes.
