More women in Kerala seek gun licences
Alapuzha: Applications gunning for arms licences are going up in the state and the number of women applying for gun permits has also considerably increased within a period of six months.
At present, there are over 20,000 gun licences issued in the state and the new applications have also doubled. Among the new applications received, about half the numbers are women. Meanwhile, in Kottayam, as many as 16 women have requested for a gun licence.
There are regulations in releasing details of women seeking permits for guns. In the wake of the abduction of a noted actress recently, the number of women applying for a licence in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Thrissur have gone up.
Not all those who apply for a gun licence would be granted and it would be given only after ascertaining the mental and physical state of the applicant.
Ernakulam district tops in the number of people possessing gun licence – 3200, which includes 4 women. The least number is from Alapuzha and that includes a lone woman out of 140.
It is the Collector of a district who is authorised to issue a licence through the Additional District Magistrate after examining the applications. Before applying for licence, a prospective buyer will have to request to the police commissioner or the SP. The Collector would ask for verification reports based on which the license would be issued. The applicants’ antecedents and skill in using the gun would also be taken into consideration before it is issued.
