Karipur: The Air Customs Intelligence seized 1.5 kg gold from a passenger who arrived at the airport in an Oman Airways flight.

The passenger, a native of Kallayi in Kozhikode, who exited through green channel was stopped at the ‘Departure’ by the Customs Intelligence officials.

The gold ribbons were concealed in a trolley baggage and was found to have smeared with mercury to give it a whitish colour. The gold is worth Rs 44,00,000 in Indian market.

The arrested told police that two people-one from Kozhikode and another a Kasargod-native - entrusted him with the work. He was offered Rs 50,000 and a flight ticket. He was asked to hand over the gold to people in Kozhikode.  

The operation was led by Customs Assistant Commissioner S Roopesh. Superintendents V K Shanavas, Muhammed Ashraf, Das Mallick and Inspectors Binesh Kumar, Haseeb Chennadu, Sandeep Nan and Satyavendra were in the team.
