Andrei Kurkov, a Ukranian novelist and independent thinker, worked for some time as a journalist, did his military service as a prison warden at Odessa, then became a film cameraman, writer of screenplays and author. He penned critically acclaimed, popular and absurdist novels including Death and the Penguin, The President’s Last Love, The Milkman of the Night, The Bickford Fuse. Ukraine Diaries: Dispatches from Kiev, is his chronicle of the social upheaval in his adopted country during the turbulent period from November 2013 to April 2014. His books are not available in Russia. He has published 21 novels, which have graced the bestseller lists in English and other European languages.
