It's a brand new beginning for Janisha with Nidhin's heart and lungs
Kochi: Lissie hospital and Dr. Jose Chacko Periyapuram once again made history by transplanting a heart and lungs in one go for the first time in Kerala's history.
Janisha, 26, daughter of Ambadan Varghese and Nirmala from Kuttanpuzha, Kothamangalam has been suffering from the rare Eisenmenger syndrome from the age of 16. Her disease was diagnosed two years ago when her condition worsened. From then on, the family had been awaiting a suitable donor organ transplant after registering on the Kerala Network for Organ Sharing.
The news came from Lakeshore Hospital when a young 19 year old bike accident victim, Nidhin, slipped into a brain dead condition. His other organs like pancreas, liver, eyes and kidneys were also donated to needy patients. After a three hour surgery, the organs were harvested and sent to Lissie where the team of doctors took seven hours to transplant them in Janisha.
In a press conference held later, Dr. Jose Chacko, who led the surgery informed that Janisha has been recovering well and has been shifted to a special room from the ICU. It is also known that the patient may be able to leave the hospital soon provided no further complications arise.
A large team of doctors including Dr. Jacob Abraham, Dr. Roni Mathew Kadavil, Dr. Bhaskar Ranganathan, Dr. Thomas Mathew, Dr. Jo Joseph, Dr. Rahul Simon, Dr. Job Wilson, Dr. C Subramanian, Dr. Manoras Mathew, Dr. Grace Maria, Dr. Kochukrishnan, Dr. Sumesh Murali were also part of the team that brought Janisha back to life.
Fr. Thomas Vaikathuparambil from the hospital said that the Chief Minister and the Health Minister Ms. K K Shailaja had made congratulatory calls following the achievement. The family was also supported by the locals who collected Rs. 24 lakhs for Janisha's treatment.
