Thiruvananthapuram: With over 500 people diagnosed with dengue fever and 68 confirmed cases of H1N1 cases in the state, Kerala is bracing up to face the spread of diseases.

So far this year, 18 people have died from H1N1 in the state. Of the total confirmed dengue cases, 54 affected people are in Thiruvananthapuram. Kollam is in the second position. 

The intermittent rains are fuelling the population of mosquitoes, the health department said.

Between January and March, 1200 were affected by dengue fever and 12 people were diagnosed with Chikungunya. As many as 280 cases of rat fever were reported during this period and four people have died of this disease.

Symptoms of Dengue Fever

Some common signs and symptoms of dengue fever include high fever accompanied by at least two of the following symptoms: severe headache, pain behind the eyes, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, swollen glands, muscle and joint pains.

H1N1 spreads through sneeze and cough. The health department has asked people to immediately consult doctor if mild flu, cough, cold with fever or respiratory distress did not subside within reasonable period.

Dr R L Saritha, Director, Health Department, said that the government has taken all precautionary measures to deal with the situation. All necessary medicines are made available in government hospitals, she said.
