Ahmedabad: National Institute of Design has invited applications for admission to the two-and-a-half year long Master of Design (M.Des.) Programmes offered by it at its campuses in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Gandhinagar.

The Campuses and the Programmes are as follows:

Ahmedabad: Animation Film Design, Furniture & Interior Design, Film & Video Communication, Graphic Design, Product Design, Textile Design (15 seats each) and Ceramic and Glass Design (10)

Gandhinagar: Apparel Design, Lifestyle Accessory Design, Strategic Design Management, New Media Design, Photography Design, Transportation & Automobile Design (15 each) and Toy & Game Design (10)

Bengaluru: Design for Retail Experience, Digital Game Design, Information Design, Interaction Design and Universal Design (15 each). In addition to the seats mentioned above, 2 supernumerary seats per specialization are allotted for overseas candidates.

Reservation of seats for Indian nationals will be as per Government of India guidelines.

An applicant can apply to a maximum of only two disciplines. Seat allotment will be based on the preference submitted by candidate at the time of viewing their final result.

Eligibility

Age: For Indian Nationals upper age limit as on 30 June 2018 will be 30 year for General Category (Applicant should have been born on or after 1 July 1988). It will be 33 years for OBC-NCL,SC & ST categories (born on or after 1 July 1985) and 35 years for PwD Reserved Category (born on or after 1 July 1983). For Foreign Nationals in Overseas (Supernumerary) Category, it will be 30 years as on 30 June 2018.

Educational Qualification: Applicant must hold one of (i) Bachelor degree of minimum 4-year duration in any specialization, after 10+2 system, from any university or institute recognized by law in India. Applicant must have passed/have appeared for/be appearing for the Bachelor degree examinations before July 2018 or (ii) Bachelor degree of minimum 3-year duration in any specialization, under the 10+2 system. Applicants must have passed the Bachelor degree examinations before July 2017 or (iii) Full-time Diploma of minimum 4-year duration in Design/Fine Arts/Applied Arts/ Architecture, after 10+2 system, from any university or institute recognised by law in India. Applicants must have passed/have appeared for/be appearing for the Diploma examinations before July 2018. 

In case the degree/certificate has been obtained from a university/board of any country other than India, an equivalence certificate must be obtained by the candidate from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi (www.aiuweb.org), at the time of document verification.

Applicants holding OCI and PIO card will have to apply only under the overseas (supernumerary) category. Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) holding an Indian passport are not eligible to apply under the Overseas (supernumerary) category and will have to apply as Indian nationals.

Overseas applicants will have to appear for DAT Prelims and DAT Mains as per the schedule mentioned in Section 2 of M.Des. Admissions Handbook 2018-19.

If the results of their final year of graduation (under 10+2+4 or more system only) have not been declared by the concerned board or university at the time of physical verification of documents, admission will be strictly provisional, subject to fulfillment of the conditions specified in the Admission Handbook and at http://admissions.nid.edu/

Design Aptitude Test (DAT): Admission will be on the basis of the two-stage Design Aptitude Test. The objective of these exams is to assess the knowledge, skills and behavioral abilities of candidates. Stage 1 is the Design Aptitude Test (DAT) Prelims, to be conducted at Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kolkata, Kurukshetra, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, Panjim, Raipur, Ranchi, Thiruvananthapuram and Vijayawada from 1000 hrs to 1300 hrs on 7th January, 2018 (Sunday).

DAT Prelims will be a pen-and-paper test carrying a maximum of 100 points, primarily evaluating the Knowledge, Comprehension, Analysis, Creativity and Visualisation ability of a candidate. It will have two parts. Part I will have Multiple-choice questions marked out of 70 points. This part has questions with one or more than one correct answer. The responses of this part will be recorded on an OMR sheet and evaluated digitally. Part II will have Subjective questions marked out of 30 points, with responses to be provided in visual and/or written formats. The question paper will be in English. All questions are compulsory. There is no negative marking.

Candidates shortlisted after the DAT Prelims will be invited to appear for the Stage 2 DAT in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru or Gandhinagar between 12th March, 2018 (Monday) and 15 April 2018 (Sunday). The Admit Card for shortlisted candidates will be available for download at www.admissions.nid.edu from 27th February, 2018 (Tuesday).

The DAT Mains for M.Des Programmes consists of two parts, the Studio Test and the Interview. The Studio Test which may consist of tests in different formats such as drawing/sketching, hands-on model making, group discussions etc. will carry 100 marks and the duration will be of three hours. The DAT Mains will be conducted in English. Interviews will be conducted separately for each discipline, immediately after the Studio Test at the same centre.

Weightages of DAT Prelims & DAT Mains for final result will be 30% and 70% respectively. Merit List will be announced at 1400 hrs on 2nd May 2018 (Wednesday).

Application: Applications can be submitted online at www.admissions.nid.edu, following the instructions there, till, 1400 hrs on 31 October 2017 (Tuesday).  Applicants are required to register/sign up online before proceeding to fill the application form.

Application fee for applying for I discipline will be Rs.2000/- for General and OBC-NCL categories. It will be Rs.4000/- for 2 disciplines. For SC/ST/PwD, it will be Rs.1000/- and Rs.2000/- respectively. For Overseas category, the fee is Rs.3000/- and Rs.6000/- respectively.

The Application fees can be paid online by Debit/Credit card or by DD.

For those paying fee by DD, the Demand draft should be taken in favour of ‘All India Management Association’ payable at New Delhi. The details of the DD should be filled in the online application form to complete the submission process. Application Form may be saved as a PDF File and may be printed, latest by 1400 hrs on 31st October 2017 (Tuesday). Demand Draft and a printout of the application form has to be sent in a single envelope by Speed Post/Courier/Registered post, to reach ‘The Project Manager-CMS All India Management Association, Management House, 14, Institutional Area, Lodhi Road, New Delhi 110 003’, before 1600 hrs on 9th November, 2017 (Thursday), to complete the application process. Those who make online payment via Debit/Credit card are not required to send the print-out of the application form.

Applications can also be submitted after 1400 hrs on 31st October 2017 (Tuesday), till 1400 hrs on 9th November 2017 (Thursday) with a fee, which will be double the normal amount, to be paid online only, by Debit/Credit card.

Applicants can review and correct the information in the application form except those related to eligibility criteria, date of birth, category, email id, citizenship and the discipline applied, from 1200 hrs on 14th November, 2017 to 1200 hrs on 16th November, 2017.

Admit Cards for DAT Prelim can be downloaded from http://admissions.nid.edu/ from 1600 hrs on 20th December 2017 (Wednesday).

Answer Keys of DAT Prelims Part I will be available at the admission website from 1100 hrs on 12th January 2018 (Friday). The Window to challenge answer keys will be available Online only, from 1100 hrs on 18th January, 2018 (Thursday), till 1600 hrs on, 19 January 2018 (Friday). Challenge has to made by paying a fee of Rs.1000/- per question challenged. Final answer keys will be uploaded on 30th January, 2018 (Tuesday).

DAT Prelims result will be announced by 1600 hrs on 15th February 2018 (Thursday). Final Merit List will be published at 1400 hrs on 2nd May 2018 (Wednesday).

Allotment of seat for M.Des will be conducted in person at Ahmedabad.

Those from reserved categories will be offered admission according to their rank in the first merit list. The score of the candidate securing the last seat in the open category will be considered as the cut-off score for the reserved category. Considering this as the standard of measure, cut-off scores will be relaxed for candidates from reserved categories. Compared to the cut-off score of the Open category, it will be less by 10% for OBC (NCL) and by 20% for SC/ST and by 30% for PwD.
