Dalit student's fall from building: Five classmates arrested

Malappuram: Police on Thursday arrested five students in connection with the incident of a Dalit student's fall from a building in Karipur.

The arrested students Shalu, Elizabeth, Vaishnavi, Neethu and Shaija are classmates of the student.

Athira, a native of Thiruvananthapuram, fell down from a building and sustained serious injuries in the fall. There were initial reports that it was a suicide attempt. However, Athira's relatives had alleged that it was not a suicide attempt and she fell down while trying to escape from her classmates’ attempt to torture her.

Athira's mother had alleged in a news conference that her daughter's classmates used to abuse her physically and mentally. The arrested students were produced before the Manjeri SC/ST court.

The incident leading to the arrest happened on November 30. Athira, a student of IPMS aviation institute at Aristo junction in Thiruvananthapuram, allegedly attempted suicide.  The student, who went for training in Karipur, had stayed at Newman lodge there. She allegedly attempted suicide while staying at the lodge.

The seriously injured student was first admitted to Kozhikode Medical College and later to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. The students were arrested on the basis of the statement given by Athira.
