Ernakulam:  NSS volunteers of Nirmala College here brought back the values of a bygone farming culture of the state by cultivating paddy and reaping a rich harvest.

Students of the college took 60 cents of land from Pottakkal George on lease and started the paddy cultivation.

'Jyothi' variety of paddy seed was used for cultivation. The students themselves did all the work related to cultivation.

Block panchayat president Mary Baby inaugurated the harvesting festival. Principal Dr. TM Joseph presided.

College Bursar Fr.Francis Kannadan honoured Pottakkal George, who gave the land for cultivation, by presenting the traditional shawl to him.

Around 120 students participated in the harvesting.  NSS programme officers and volunteers led the effort.
