Amid setbacks, this farmer still rests his hope in farming
Malappuram: Though what this family gets from farming is only loss, Tomy and his family have not lost faith in farming.
The fall in prices of vegetables and climatic changes proved detrimental for Tomy.
Tomy and his family shifted to Karuvarakundu in Malappuram from Gudalur two years ago and they started cultivating Bitter Gourd, Snake Gourd, Plantain and Ginger by taking four acres of land on lease at Payyakodu in Punnakkad.
Bitter Gourd, which fetched till Rs 40 per kg last year, is now getting Rs 20 -24 only, he says.
The shortage in rainfall and untimely dew and scorching heat have affected the cultivation adversely, he adds.
However, the family did not lose faith in farming.
Tomy is now searching for a suitable land for farming. Apart from the hill ranges, Tomy is distributing vegetables outside the district also.
His wife Shanty and children Tinesh and Tintu are assisting him in cultivation.
